In Sri Lanka there is only one season – summertime!

In the the plains there is a typical tropical climate, with average temperatures of 80 F in Colombo. At higher located sites (in a height of 6500 feet) it cools down to about 60 F. As a rule there is bright sunshine, even at monsoon time there are warm summerdays. From May until July the south-west monsoon brings rain to the southern, western and inner parts of the country. The north-east monsoon comes to the northern and eastern parts of the country in December and January.

Clothing
Lightweight cotton clothing, sun shade and glasses, comfortable shoes or sandals. In the mountains you will need a sweater. When visiting religious sites you should be dressed respectfully; beachwear is improper. In Buddhistic and Hindu temples you take off your shoes and headwear. Bathing topless is not appreciated.

    Working hours

    On working days the stores are opened from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Some shops are also opened on Saturdays until 1pm.

    Holidays

    Except Saturday and Sunday every day of full moon (Poya Day) is a holiday. On that days all amusement-sites keep closed and no liquors are sold. But in hotels you can order alcohol already the day before.
